Job Description

Rondout Valley Central School District seeks an experienced, student-centered educational leader to serve as High School Principal. The successful candidate will provide strong instructional leadership, foster a positive school culture, and collaborate with staff, families, and the community to support the academic, social-emotional, and post-secondary success of all students.


The High School Principal serves as the chief instructional leader and administrator of the school. The principal is responsible for the overall operation of the building, including supervision of staff, implementation of curriculum and instruction, student services, and ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment that prepares students for graduation and future success.

Key Responsibilities:

Instructional Leadership

  • Lead the development and implementation of high-quality instructional programs aligned with New York State learning standards and graduation requirements.
  • Supervise and evaluate instructional staff in accordance with district policies and the APPR evaluation framework.
  • Promote data-driven decision-making to improve student achievement, including analysis of Regents exam performance and graduation outcomes.
  • Support effective instructional practices, differentiated learning, and intervention systems (MTSS/RtI/AIS).
  • Oversee curriculum implementation, including advanced coursework, electives, and college and career readiness programs.

School Climate and Culture

  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful school culture that supports student well-being and engagement.
  • Promote culturally responsive practices and equitable opportunities for all students.
  • Address student discipline issues in accordance with district policies and restorative practices when appropriate.
  • Support student voice, leadership opportunities, and extracurricular involvement.

Staff Supervision and Development

  • Recruit, supervise, mentor, and evaluate teachers and support staff.
  • Promote professional development aligned with district goals and instructional improvement.
  • Build collaborative teams and support professional learning communities.
  • Encourage staff growth in instructional practices, data use, and student engagement strategies.

School Operations

  • Manage the daily operation of the school building.
  • Develop and oversee the master schedule to support instructional programming and student needs.
  • Oversee student attendance, scheduling, and student services.
  • Prepare and monitor the building budget.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies, Education Law, and Commissioner’s Regulations.

Student Services and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with special education regulations and support services for students with disabilities.
  • Monitor student progress toward graduation requirements, including credit accumulation and Regents exams.
  • Implement and maintain school safety procedures and emergency preparedness plans.
  • Support programs addressing student wellness, mental health, and social-emotional development.

Family and Community Engagement

  • Build strong relationships with families and community partners.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding school initiatives, student progress, and graduation pathways.
  • Promote community involvement in school activities, events, and programs.
  • Support partnerships that enhance college and career readiness opportunities.

District Leadership

  • Collaborate with district administrators and other principals on curriculum, programs, and district initiatives.
  • Provide recommendations to the Superintendent regarding staffing, programs, and school improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to district-wide planning focused on student achievement and post-secondary readiness.

Qualifications:

  • New York State School Building Leader (SBL) certification (or eligibility).
  • Master’s degree in educational leadership, administration, or related field.
  • Minimum five years’ successful experience in teaching and/or educational leadership.
  • Demonstrated leadership in curriculum development, instructional improvement, and staff supervision.

Preferred

  • Experience as an assistant principal or building administrator, preferably at the secondary level.
  • Experience with master scheduling and high school programming.
  • Knowledge of graduation requirements, Regents exams, and college and career readiness initiatives.
  • Experience with data analysis and school improvement planning.
  • Knowledge of special education regulations and student support systems.
  • Strong communication and collaborative leadership skills

Salary: In accordance with the Rondout Valley Administrators’ Association contract.
